The second largest city in Indonesia with over 6 million people, Surabaya is located in East Java, north of Mount Bromo and the West of Bali. The story goes that Surabaya’s name derives from the Javanese words Suro, meaning shark, and Boyo, meaning crocodile. Most people come here for business, as there is not many sight seeing to do in the city itself. However, Surabaya is a gateway city to Bromo and Bali.

=Getting There & Getting Around=

1 Juanda_Airport

Surabaya has an international airport and it can be reached via many airlines. Being the second busiest airport in Indonesia after the airport in Jakarta, Juanda Airport also recently opening a Terminal 2 in 2014 to accommodate the air traffic.

From the airport to the city center, there are many airport taxis available upon your arrival. It costs between Rp 120 000 to 150 000 depending on the location you are heading to; the taxis include sedan type and the suv type.

There is an Airport Bus service operated by DAMRI and costs only Rp 15 000.

The safest and best way to getting around Surabaya will be on a taxi. You can insist on a metered fare or a negotiated fixed fare. It begins from Rp 40 000 aorund the city. In a metered taxi, do round up your fare to the nearest Rp 1 000 as it is considered polite.

If you are here in Surabaya, you have to head to G-Walk Surabaya to find night markets. It is a good place to spend your weekends with your family by walking around this area. G-Walk is where you will find many local food fares such as lontong, balap, tahu campur, gado-gado and many more. If you prefer to venture into non-Asian food, you can also find pizzas, burgers and other typical western foods in G-Walk.

This old Dutch colonial style compound was built in 1862 and is now a preserved historical site. Cited as one of the top tourist attractions in Surabaya, the complex has a museum, an art gallery, a souvenir shop and a café. The museum’s main attaction is viewing hundreds of girls hand-rolling Indonesia’s most prestigious cigarette, Dji Sam Soe. You have to check for the timing and you are not going to regret witnessing the incredible speed the cigarettes are prepared using traditional equipment.

  • Mount Bromo

The closest city to Mount Bromo is Surabaya, a 3 hours bus or car ride depending on the traffic and weather. It is less than Rp 50 000 per person each way. The volcano hike is worth scenery and the experience will be even more memorable if you are riding on a horse at Mount Bromo.
